Everybody knows the struggle of getting their headphone cords all tangled up around their hands, in their pockets, or caught on something else entirely.
Enter AirPods that don’t have any cords to contend with! These handy dandy little devices won’t give you any frustrating cords to deal with, but they will eventually run out of battery, and how will you tell when they do?
AirPods do make a sound when their battery is low. While the AirPods are in use, a quiet tone will sound in both AirPods that signals there is 20% of battery left. The battery life can also be viewed on the iPhone screen by replacing the AirPods in their case and opening said case near the phone.
There are plenty of telltale signs when your AirPods run out of battery that you’ll be able to look out for.
You should also make sure you know how to identify when the AirPods are charging so you’ll know if something is ever off.
Let’s take a look at a couple of these AirPod-related tips!
How Can You Tell When AirPods Batteries are Low?
The easiest way to tell determine if your AirPods’ batteries are low is to check through your phone.
All you have to do for this is to replace your AirPods inside their case. Open the case up when it is close to your iPhone. A small bubble should pop up on your screen that shows the battery life percentage of both the case and the AirPods themselves.
You can also listen carefully and wait until your music stops playing.
If you were listening to music or audio of any kind and suddenly you can’t hear anything, that is a sure sign that your AirPods have used their battery life and need to be charged.
To charge your AirPods, put them in the charging case. If your case has some battery life, it is capable of charging your pods in 20 minutes. The case itself will take a little longer to charge, maybe an hour or so.
Do AirPods Have a Beep for Low Battery Warning?
Another easy way to know if your AirPods are nearing the end of their charge is to listen.
When AirPods hit the 20% battery mark, a quiet beep should sound from the pods.
This means you should put them back in the case for a little while and let them recharge for a few minutes. Luckily, AirPods charge extremely quickly.
Check out this article on Airpods Battery charging times for more information.
However, this tone is pretty quiet and you may have some difficulty hearing it. You can change the volume of the beep if you want to make it louder.
One nice thing about AirPods is that they have a few visual indicators that the battery is low as well. If you are listening to music, you are going to have to depend on the tone to let you know when the battery is almost dead.
If you’re on your phone watching a movie or playing video games, a notification bubble will appear at the top of your screen saying that the AirPods have 20% battery left.
Watch closely for that notification and when you see it, pause what you are watching or listening to and put your AirPods into the charging case.
What Color Should AirPods Be When Charging?
Let’s talk a little bit about how to identify the charging status of your AirPods.
Anytime your AirPods are less than 100% charged (whether they are plugged in or not,) the indicator light will shine an orange/amber color. When you initially plug the charging case in, you should be seeing an orange light.
When the AirPods have 100% battery life, the light should turn green.
How do you tell if your case needs charging?
The same way! When your AirPods are inside the case, the indicator light indicates the charge status of the pods themselves. When your AirPods are being used and when they are out of the case, the indicator light is indicating the charging case’s battery status.
Either way, the way you determine the battery life is the same. Anything under a full charge will show an orange light and a fully charged device will be indicated by a green light.
Pay careful attention to your indicator light, whether your AirPods are in use or not. Remember that AirPod cases need to be charged as well!

Do I Need The Case To Use AirPods?
Now for the final question: do you need an AirPods case to use your AirPods?
Technically, you don’t need the case to use your AirPods. If you forgot that you put your AirPods in your pocket and you don’t have your case with you, you can still use your AirPods with no problems.
However, that is only the case if you have already paired your AirPods to your phone.
A case is needed for the initial setup and pairing to the iPhone. Otherwise, your AirPods won’t connect to your iPhone or other devices.
If you have already paired your AirPods to your phone, then the case is technically unnecessary for plain old use.
However, you need the AirPods case to charge AirPods so you can continue listening to music.
You simply cannot use a phone charger to charge the AirPods themselves; they must be in the case. If you are asking this question because you have been contemplating throwing your case out, that’s not a good idea!
Your AirPods charging case also helps you keep track of the Bluetooth earbuds.
Your AirPods case is still how you keep your AirPods alive and charged, so an AirPods case is extremely necessary.
If you lose your AirPods case, you can always use the FindMy app to locate it. If the case has gone missing and there’s simply no hope that you will find it, you can use a friend’s AirPods case to charge your AirPods.
