The ever-popular Blue Yeti Microphone has been a true warrior over the years, but it doesn’t come without some issues. If you are having difficulty muting your Blue Yeti this article is here to help.
So how do you mute a Blue Yeti Microphone?
You can mute a Blue Yeti Microphone using the mute button on the side of the microphone beside the volume knob. If you press the button labeled mute and the flashing red light turns to a solid red light, you will know that you have successfully muted your Blue Yeti microphone. There are certain circumstances that can cause muting issues. Allow me to explain.
Reported Muting Problems With The Blue Yeti Microphone
- Some customers have reported problems with having to press the mute button multiple times or the microphone mutes but does not unmute once muted.
As frustrating as it is for the few unlucky customers, this is, thankfully, not a widespread issue with Blue Yeti microphones.
If you are one of the unlucky customers and you are having trouble figuring out how to mute and unmute your Blue Yeti or you have muted it, but it won’t unmute, here are a few things you can try to fix your microphone:
Blue Yeti Microphone Setup
You will first need to make sure your microphone is set up properly.
Setting up a Blue Yeti microphone is pretty simple. Once you have taken the microphone out of the box, you will want to make sure the microphone is pointing straight up as the sound goes into the microphone from the sides, not the top.
You will then need to connect the USB to the base of the microphone and connect the other end to your computer. The red light on the mute button should turn on if your computer is powered on. If it is flashing, that means your microphone is unmuted. If it is a solid red light, that means your microphone is muted.
Depending on whether you are using a Mac or a Windows computer, you will need to open the settings or systems preference menu, navigate to sound settings, and under the audio input menu, you will need to select your Blue Yeti and save the settings so that your computer receives audio input from the Blue Yeti and not the default built-in microphone.
From the settings or system preference menu, you can also test your microphone. Make sure the microphone volume is turned up, the gain knob is set in the middle (you can adjust it to your desired settings when you are ready to record), and the red light on your mute button is flashing.

Turn up the Volume
Check to make sure the volume knob on the microphone and the volume on your computer are turned all the way up. Some programs will even indicate the sound frequency that is being received through the microphone to give you visual assistance.

Press The Mute Button On The Blue Yeti
If you don’t hear any sound from the computer speakers, try pressing the mute button a few times. It is possible that even though the red light is flashing, the computer is registering the microphone as muted.
Can You Plug Headphones Into A Blue Yeti?
Another amazing feature of the blue yeti is that you can directly plug headphones into the actual microphone for real-time monitoring.
If you still can’t hear anything, try plugging in your headphones directly into the microphone, make sure to turn the volume all the way up, press the mute button and make sure it has a flashing red light. Then test the microphone again.

Other Possible Problems With Blue Yeti
It is possible that the microphone itself is functioning properly, but the USB cable that you are using to connect the microphone to your computer may not be working. Even if the microphone is receiving power, the cable may not be receiving the audio from the microphone.
Try using a different USB cable. If the problem persists, it is probably not the cable.
Technical Support
If you are still having trouble with your microphone not muting and unmuting properly, you may have a faulty microphone which means you might need to contact customer support.
Customer support will probably ask you for two pieces of information:
- What is the serial number?
- When did you purchase the microphone?
Where is my Blue Yeti Serial Number?
Customer support will need to know the microphone’s serial number in order to help you troubleshoot the problem that may be causing the mute button to malfunction. They will also know if your microphone may be part of a batch with the same issue you are having.
To locate the serial number on a Blue Yeti microphone, look at the base of the microphone beside the USB port where you plug in the microphone. You will see two different numbers. One number is labeled P/N, which is the part number. It begins with 888 and a dash, followed by six numbers. This is not the number customer service needs, as this number is the same on all Blue Yeti microphones. The other number is labeled S/N. This is the serial number, and it should consist of 12 numbers and letters.
Purchase Date Of A Blue Yeti Microphone
Customer service will need to know the exact date that you purchased the microphone so that the representative can determine whether the microphone is still under warranty.
According to the Blue Microphones warranty policy, if a Blue Yeti microphone malfunctions and needs to be serviced within two years of the purchase date, the services will be covered free of charge.
Faulty Blue Yeti Microphone
It is possible that your microphone is malfunctioning because of a faulty part. If you have talked to customer service and the representative is not able to determine what is preventing the mute button from functioning properly and the warranty is still good, they should be able to help you get a replacement microphone.
Conclusion
Blue Yeti microphones are simple and easy to use, and when they function properly, they are great starter mics for podcasters and YouTubers alike. The mute button is conveniently located on the side of the microphone so that you can see the indicator light easily while recording.
When the mic isn’t working the way it is supposed to, it can cause frustration, but sometimes these problems come with easy fixes like pushing the unmute button a few times if it sticks or turning the volume up.
If you can’t figure out how to mute and unmute your microphone, you may have to go through the trouble of replacing the microphone, but this could happen with any microphone. Luckily, with the help of a Blue Microphones customer service representative, if your mic is still under warranty, you should get a new mic and be back to recording quickly.
